Sustainability Mission

At Richard Lang & Son, sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do. As a family-run business since 1949, we take responsibility for managing resources and minimising our environmental impact, from our Derby warehouse to our global supply chain.

1. Packaging & Waste Reduction ♻️

In 2023, we transitioned to fully paperless sales orders, invoicing, and order tracking, cutting unnecessary paper use.
We send all cardboard and paper waste to the local recycling mill for reuse. Whenever possible, we repurpose used boxes for packaging; leftover cardboard is shredded into eco-friendly fill, reducing waste and virgin material demand.

2. Energy & Operational Efficiency

Warehouse upgrades like fast-operating shutter doors and gravity-fed rollers have optimised workflow, reduced energy loss, and minimised manual handling.
In 2025, we installed LED sensor-controlled lighting, ensuring lights activate only when needed, significantly reducing energy consumption.
Packing stations now feature thermostatic, sensor-controlled heaters, providing zoned warmth to employees and eliminating wasted heat.

3. Waste Reuse & Recycling

Our packaging hierarchy prioritises reuse first: boxes and shredded cardboard are reused wherever possible, diverting waste from landfill and supporting a circular approach.
Anything not repurposed is fully recycled via the local mill, closing the loop in our operations.

4. Supplier Sustainability Audits

Throughout 2025, we personally visited over 25 supplier factories (by train and road) to assess and support sustainable practices, reinforcing our commitment to responsible sourcing.

5. Product Sourcing & Design

Founded in 1949, we champion in‑house design and quality-controlled importing of unique, value-driven gift products, all while honouring our environmental values and product excellence.

6. Digital Transformation

Our continuous shift toward digital workflows, including automated invoicing and advanced order-tracking, has streamlined processes and reduced waste across the business.
